Advice for couples getting married at The Gardens
Make the most of the gardens
The gardens are one of the venue’s biggest attractions, so don’t leave all your portraits until later in the evening. I usually recommend setting aside 15–20 minutes after the ceremony or during golden hour to wander the grounds. It keeps things relaxed and gives us plenty of beautiful backdrops without taking you away from your guests for too long.
Plan for golden hour
If your wedding falls between May and September, the evening light can be absolutely gorgeous. A quick 10-minute stroll outside around sunset often creates some of the most romantic images of the day. You’ll be surprised how much can be captured in such a short amount of time.
Don’t worry if it rains
Kent weather is famously unpredictable, but The Gardens offers plenty of sheltered areas and elegant indoor spaces. Some of my favourite wedding photographs have been taken after a shower, with lush greenery and dramatic skies adding even more atmosphere.
Keep your confetti close by
The outdoor ceremony and garden paths provide a wonderful setting for a confetti exit. Ask your venue coordinator where they recommend guests stand, and nominate someone to hand out the confetti before the ceremony ends so everyone is ready.
Allow enough time for group photos
The gardens provide lots of space for family photographs, but it’s worth preparing a list of the groups you’d like beforehand. Having a designated family member help gather people keeps everything running smoothly and means you can get back to celebrating.
Wear sensible shoes for portraits
The grounds are beautifully landscaped, so if you’re planning to explore them for photos, consider bringing a pair of comfortable shoes or flats. You can always swap back into your wedding shoes afterwards.
Enjoy the venue
One of the best things about The Gardens is how peaceful it feels. Try not to spend the whole day thinking about the schedule—take a few moments together to soak it all in. Those quiet moments often become some of the most meaningful photographs.
Photographer’s tip
Trust the timeline rather than chasing the perfect photo. The Gardens is naturally beautiful throughout the day, and the best images often come from genuine moments rather than carefully staged ones. Relax, enjoy your wedding, and let the venue, and your day, tell the story.
How much does a wedding at The Gardens cost?
Standard wedding packages typically start around £9,330 – £10,510 for a celebration including venue hire, catering, drinks, and key inclsusions for around 50 day guests (numbers and specifics can vary). Pricing varies significantly based on season, day of week, guest numbers and packages choices.
Often the venue will produce a bespoke quote once they know your preferred date and guest list.

The History of The Gardens
Origins as Organic Gardens
- The site now known as The Gardens began life in the 1990s as an experimental community garden project. It was created under the guidance of a charity dedicated to organic gardening methods (originally the Henry Doubleday Research Association, now Garden Organic). The purpose was to demonstrate organic gardening techniques and showcase a variety of garden styles.
- Over 12 acres, volunteers and gardeners transformed formerly agricultural fields into multiple themed garden areas illustrating gardening styles from medieval to Victorian and beyond.
Development and Public Opening
- The gardens officially opened to the public in 1995, quickly gaining attention as a beautifully landscaped space full of planting diversity and horticultural interest.
- During this period, the gardens were noteworthy enough to attract such admirers as King Charles, who visited in 1996 and donated a Victorian greenhouse from his own collection — a feature that remains a highlight today.
Changes and Challenges
- Like many charity-run gardens, the site faced ongoing funding and management challenges. In the broader history of Yalding Gardens (the larger historic organic gardens), there were closures and re-openings in the 2000s due to financial difficulties and changes in management.
- These cycles of activity reflect the broader difficulties that many heritage or volunteer garden projects experience in sustaining long-term operations without consistent support.
Transformation into a Wedding Venue
- In 2016, the current owners repositioned the gardens as a dedicated wedding and events venue. This marked a new chapter: exclusive use of the gardens for civil ceremonies, receptions, and celebrations, alongside restored garden features like the barn, tipis, and photography spots.
- Since then, The Gardens has become a popular choice for couples seeking a romantic, rustic English country wedding surrounded by beautifully maintained landscape gardens, with 16 distinct garden sections to explore.
Today
- Today The Gardens continues as a family-owned venue that retains its horticultural heritage — blending historic organic landscape design with modern wedding-day infrastructure (like barns and tipis) for all-season celebrations.
- The space is valued both for its natural beauty and the ability for couples to tailor ceremonies and receptions within a truly unique garden setting.
